Reading Workshop
Here you have several short texts about famous groups and singers. Read them and answer the questions below. Then, do the following exercises about vocabulary.
is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1981. Founded when drummer Lars Ulrich posted an advertisement in a local newspaper, Metallica's line-up has primarily consisted of Ulrich, rhythm guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield and lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, while going through a number of bassists. Currently, the spot is held by Robert Trujillo.
Metallica's early releases included fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship that placed them as one of the "big four" of the thrash metal subgenre alongside Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax during the genre's development into a popular style.[1] The band earned a growing fan base in the underground music community and critical acclaim, with the 1986 release Master of Puppets described as one of the most influential and "heavy" thrash metal albums. The band achieved substantial commercial success with Metallica (1991), which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. With this release the band expanded its musical direction resulting in an album that appealed to a more mainstream audience
NIRVANA
For three short years Nirvana were the biggest band on Earth, the public face of grunge to the adoring millions. The band ceased to be when singer Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994, ensuring his place forever in the pantheon of rock's tragic heroes.
REM
Lush guitars, poetic lyrics & Stipe's remarkable voice have earned REM the accolade of greatest band in the world. Surviving public indifference and adoration, plus the loss of a founder member, they continue to make great music some 20 years on.
COLDPLAY
Everyone's favourite band of the past few years. Over the course of two albums they have shown that there is still room for poetic rock music in the new century. Let's face it, you can't beat a proper song.
OASIS
They weren't quite the new Beatles, but they certainly gave us something to smile about and sing along to in the Brit-pop era. Fuelled by the sibling rivalry of the brothers Gallagher, they look likely to be grabbing the headlines for many years to come
ADELE
Dido Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong, best-selling middle class educated songstress, who writes about the broken love affairs of the modern lass. Despite critics' protestations she is immensely successful: there's a market for privileged girls who shop at Top Shop
Questions:
1.- How many fans did Nirvana have around the world?
2.- Who are Dido's buyers?
3.- How long have Coldplay been loved by everybody?
4.- Have REM kept all the members along the years?
5.- Do the Gallagher brothers get on well?
Say if these sentences are true or false, according to the text:
1.- Dido's critics really love her.
2.- Coldplay have demonstrated that poetic rock music is still possible.
3.- REM will continue to make music for another 20 years.
